Seagulls downed at Winterfield Road. Match Report from Andy Harris.
Rovers turned in a fantastic performance that bodes well for the new season ahead as they out played their visitors from two divisions higher. Ben Cleverley produced a free kick on 8 minutes which brother Dan headed wide and 2 minutes later Jon French released Pete Sheppard down the left and his deep cross was met at the back post by full back Stuart Tovey but his volley cleared the bar by some margin. On 19 minutes Rovers produced a great flowing move that ended with Tovey's right wing cross being headed just wide by Rob Claridge. The visitor's first strike on goal didn't come until the 24th minute when Ashan Holgate's shot from distance was deflected out for a corner.
The home side went ahead on 27 minutes as again the influential French found Ben Cleverley in the area on the right and his run took him past two defenders before setting up Claridge who calmly side footed his shot past the Weston keeper,Ryan Harrison.
Rovers were disrupted by the loss of Claridge on 36 minutes with an ankle injury and the vistors came back into the game. Assistant manager, Andy Gurney had a chance on 43 minutes when he got on the end of a cross from the right but Tovey got in a great last minute block. The visitors got back on level terms right on half time as they were awarded a free kick on the right. Ben Wells kick for once found the home defence static and substitute, Cedric Abraham, nipped in to stab the ball home.
The goal and perhaps a half time team talk spurred the vistors and just after the break they enjoyed their best period of the game. Substitute Marvin Brown had a shot blocked blocked but Holgate reacted first and set up Gurney but he failed to hit the target and then skipper, Dean Grubb, went on a great run down the right before setting up Mike Green who was denied by a great save from Rover's keeper, Kyle Phillips. Rovers then responded on 57 minutes with the best move of the match as one touch football from Boys, Tom Jacobs (on for Claridge) and finally Pete Sheppard saw a great cross to the far post where Dean Pendry's half volley was brilliantly saved by Harrison. Right on the hour mark the hard working Jacobs was desperately unlucky not to open his account for Rovers as his turn and shot from the edge of the box came back out from the indside of Harrison's right post. Weston then spurned a great chance to take the lead against the run of play as they won a free kick on 77 mins. The kick was headed across goal and Brown at the back post volleyed wide with the goal at his mercy.
It was a miss they were made to pay for as 2 mins later Jacobs did well to control a ball forward, turn his defender, make progress before laying the ball off to trialist, Zuco, whose 35 yard effort flew past the helpless Harrison. With 2 minutes left the hosts made the game safe and again it was Jacobs who took advantage of the space available as the visitors pressed for an equaliser, this time laying the ball off to substitute, Dan Flower who scored his third goal in pre season with a shot that went in off the post with Harrison diving low to his right.
Rover's final pre season game sees them travel to Yate Town on Saturday the 9th of August for a 3 pm kick off. |
