On the Wright track

 Match Report from David Aldridge.

A strong Paulton Reserves side put nine goals past an under strength Burnham United Reserves, but the final score could have been much more from a Paulton side that were completely in control from the start, even with Dale Peckham starting on the bench.

Early attempts from Flower, Tugwell, Cleverly and Crewe all failed to hit the target, until on fifteen minutes Gareth Wright was on the receiving end of a nice cross from Tugwell which was cleanly put in the back of the net. Wright made it two eight minutes later, with a well controlled header, and fired three more in to the back of the net in the last ten minutes of the first half.

Paulton started fast again after the break, and in the first minute Mines delivered another excellent chance for Wright, but he couldn’t connect with it, and the ball rolled on to the Burnham keeper. Nolan had a diving header nudged over the top following an incomplete clearance from a corner, and there were more chances for Latham, Cleverly and Crew, which kept the Burnham keeper and defence busy. A cross on fifty eight minutes from Cleverley lined Wight up for his sixth, and another good ball from Tugwell set Wright up for a seventh ten minutes later.

Peckham got on the score sheet ten minutes from the end when the Burnham defence failed to clear a corner, and he scrambled it in for Paulton’s eighth goal.

Latham seemed doomed not to score with numerous chances put wide by some dramatic goal-line clearances and superb saves until in the dying seconds of the game he finally got the ball in the clear and ran into the area, slotting a fine shot into the left hand corner of the net.

With seven goals, the man of the match has to be Gareth Wright, but a special mention has to go to the Burnham goalkeeper, who, despite letting in nine, stopped at least twenty good strikes. Credit must go to Burnham for continuing to push right up to the end, and staying positive. Justin Tugwell also deserves a mention, after some sterling work in the middle for Paulton.

Four straight wins for Mark Evans side keep them at the top of the table, and definitely on form for next weeks home game against Langford Rovers 2000. However, this game promises to be a much harder challenge, especially with Flower picking up a broken finger during today’s match, and Ben Mines starting a one month ban.

Goals: Wright, 15, 23, 35, 39, 43, 58, 67, Peckham, 81, Latham, 90.
Referee: Tony Phillips.
