Honours even - Match Report from Tony Walsh
‘The Forrester’s’ manager Lee Relish will be disappointed to have dropped two points at home, but Rovers overall display deserved a point and maintain their undefeated start to the season. Paulton manager Andy Jones used a squad rotation to bring in Jason Hughes with the ex-Welton Rovers player making his Southern League debut, another new face was a start for Martin Paul on a dual registration from Bath City with Rob Cousins and Josh Jeffries dropping to the bench. After early Rovers pressure the home side dominated the first fifteen minutes with shots going wide from Scott Griffin, Paulton central defender Ollie Price cutting out a dangerous through ball from Lewis Sommers and then from a Steve Cowe left wing corner Dan Heath headed home, but the referee correctly ruled that he pushed Price in the act. The visitors then had a good spell with Chris Lane providing several jinky runs, striker Rob Claridge had a header turned away by full back Jamie Hammonds and Ben Cleverley was proving a thorn in the side resulting in a booking for Neil Griffiths. The former Swindon Town man Cowe showed several periods of class. First a firm free kick was missed by his Cinderford team mates, then a neat through ball was snuffed out by keeper Kyle Phillips who then saved bravely at the feet of Griffin. Debutant Paul was now linking well with his new colleagues and after a flowing moving involving Lane, Dan Cleverley and Stuart Tovey he latched onto a ball missed by Heath leaving him one on one with keeper Matt Bath who clutched his attempted to place the ball into the top right hand corner of the net. Sommers who at six foot six was a target for high balls and long throw ins into the box was a hand full but Hughes did well to counter his aerial threat. The second half saw book sides try foray’s into the others halves. Lane was injured for Rovers and despite initial concerns he completed the match. Whilst an apparently innocuous knock to the home captain Marvin Thompson meant he was substituted by Matt Hearne in the fifty sixth minute. Both sides tried to get the breakthrough with shots, peppered largely off target, at both goals. The Paulton boss replaced Paul with Ricky Hulbert with twenty minutes left and his pacey runs gave the home defence food for thought. The lanky Sommers was posing less of a threat in the air and noticeable that he did not always get off the ground in aerial challenges. As the game closed to a stalemate Price completed a determined team and man of the match performance for Paulton by blocking a pile driver from substitute Jody Bevan to seal a point.
