Impressive Rovers too strong for Town.

Match report from Andy Harris

NB Next week's match away to Cirencester Town has been moved to Sunday 21st 3 pm KO

Rovers playing down a severe slope completed dominated the first half. Their first chance came on 7 minutes as Lee Marshall took a long throw in from the left and Matt Cooper won the header but home keeper, James Foster, collected easily. However he was forced to make a much more difficult save on 11 minutes as he had to push away Marshall’s superb header from Alex Ball’s cross.

The visitors took the lead on 19 minutes with a superb move. Ben Lacey went on a run down the left and his ball into the box saw Cooper set up Charlie Rich who volleyed home from the edge of the box to claim his first goal for Rovers.

The home sides efforts were few and far between and it came as no surprise that Rovers deservedly doubled the lead on 34 minutes as Rich’s free kick saw Cooper win the header and Joe White set up Alex Ball to fire home.

Hungerford’s only serious attack of the half produced a goal a minute before the break as Rovers failed to clear a corner from the right and Kevin Halliday’s right wing cross was forced home at the back post by Jamie Green.

With the benefit of the slope the home side came out fired up and although Tom Fila did test visiting keeper, Kyle Phillips with a long range effort Hungerford  failed to really threaten and Lacey broke away only top be denied by a good save from James Foster.

Rovers scored again on 75 minutes as Ball’s superb pass over the home defence saw Cooper clear and he crossed for substitute, Rob Claridge to fire home.

Cooper was unlucky 2 minutes later as his header from Rich’s right wing corner thumped against the bar. However he was not to be denied and he got on the score sheet himself on 83 minutes sliding in at the far post to touch home Lacey’s cross.

Rovers completed the rout on 89 minutes as Ball again sent in a fine pass to substitute, Phil Waters, and he crossed from the right where Rich’s volley hit Cooper and deflected into the net.

This meant Rovers have netted nine times in their last two away trips which bodes well for Tuesday’s visit to Andover (7.45 pm KO) and a rare Sunday run out at fellow promotion chasers, Cirencester Town (3 pm KO).
