Frustrated Reserves piped away to Shirehampton

Match report from Gareth Wright

Paulton travelled to Shirehampton with 7 players unavailable and without their influential Captain, Lewis Colllier, who has continued to feature in the first team.

Paulton dominated the early exchanges and went close when Reynolds smashed the post from 18yards. Bevan was rarely troubled in goal with Burns and Nolan working well with Pow and Mills either side.

On 40 mins Wright was sent clear through on goal on for the Shirehampton defender to clearly handle the through ball. The referee gave a free kick but saw no further action necessary.

Kennedy and Mines controlled the midfield but were subject to of foul play on several occasions however no protection was offered to by the referee who refused to book or deliver any punishment tothe players in front of a hostile home crowd.

Paulton did continue to battle and looked the stronger side, unfortunately just before half time they suffered a massive blow when Nolan suffered a severe knee injury. After a strong tackle he appeared to have twisted his knee, an ambulance was called and later cancelled such was the resilience of the Paulton defender who was carried off.

In the second half Reynolds switched to centre half and saw the introduction to young James Poole who immediately got into the game supplying the front pair of Wright and Stanley.

Stanley was sent free minutes later only to be clearly pulled down by the last defender. Again the referee only saw fit to give a free kick with no further punishment

Rovers continued to match Shirehampton and battled to the end, however on the 82 minute in form keeper Mark Bevan sustained a thigh injury after making a routine save.

With no Subs left Shirehampton picked up on this and pressed forward to score minutes later
Kennedy almost hit back straight away, however it was not to be as the homeside hit on the break to seal a 2-0 victory.

The Shirehampton manager made the effort to enter the Paulton dressing room after the game to declare there delight at managing to beat a better team on the day

With such a spirited performance Rovers can reflect on a game they should have gained points, despite controversial referring. They can be confident now with a run of home games that with continued improvement and home support that they can finish in the creditable position they deserve
