Saturday 22 August 2009 K-O 3-00 p.m. ZAMARETTO SOUTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE SOUTH & WEST MATCH REPORT FROM ANDY HARRIS
Rovers went into the game with a new look defence following the loss of Stuart Tovey with a foot injury, Keeper Kyle Phillips with a shoulder injury and Charlie Rich who was unwell. Dean Pendry came in at right back, reserves keeper Courtney Redwood was in goal and new loan signing from Bristol Rovers, James Tyrrell came in at left back.
The game itself was decided in the sixth minute when after a bright start from Rovers United keeper, John Beames, hauled down Dan Cleverley in the penalty area and Chris Lane made no mistake from the penalty spot. At the end of a disappointing first half Pablo Heysham sent in a great long range effort that rattled the visitor’s cross bar with keeper, Courtney Redwood well beaten. The second half was much more entertaining and Ancelot Odhiambo should have scored 4 minutes after the break after good work from Luke Holden, but was denied by the first of a series of fine saves by Redwood in the Rovers goal. Rovers responded and Danny Barwood was unlucky to see his well struck shot go narrowly wide as the home side failed to clear a corner. Play began to switch from end to end as Odhiambo went close with an overhead kick and Ashley Caldwell almost scored his second goal for Rovers but Beames did well to get down low and turn the ball away for a corner. Redwood then produced two fine saves to twice deny Holden before Barwood’s effort at the other end was cleared off the line by Sam Elkins. The home side pressed hard for the equaliser but Rovers’ makeshift defence held firm and with the pace of Ben Lacey and Jamie Taylor up front the visitors always looked dangerous on the break.
