10 man Rovers left to rue missed chances

MATCH REPORT FROM ANDY HARRIS

Honours ended even as Rovers played most of the second period with only 10 and were made to pay for a glut of missed chances in the first half.

However it was the visitors who should have taken a 2nd minute lead as a free kick from the right found the unmarked Sam Shorney but his header failed to hit the target. Sam Morgan and Ben Lacey had great chances for the home side but were denied by fine saves from Town keeper, Seb Gribble. However Lacey caused the opposition defence severe problems all evening and it was no surprise when on 13 minutes he controlled a cross from the left, beat his marker and fired Rovers into the lead.

Rovers’ advantage lasted just 4 minutes before a good passing move saw Shorney clear and he atoned for his earlier error by racing clear and calmly slotting the ball home.

Lacey forced two further saves from Gribble before setting up Morgan with an easy chance but he blazed the ball over the bar with only the keeper to beat. However Rovers reclaimed the lead 6 minutes from the break as Lacey again turned provider, this time for Rob Banfield who fired calmly into the net. It could have been three moments later as Morgan raced clear, rounded the keeper and saw his shot cleared off the line by a defender.

The second half began in dramatic fashion as after a tussle on the Rovers’ left, Josh Harrington was shown a straight red card. Within minutes Town secured the equaliser as again a through ball found Shorney who made no mistake with a good finish.

Lacey almost restored Rovers’ lead on 55 minutes as he collected the ball and went around two defenders before sending in a curling shot that just cleared the bar. He went close again on 75 minutes but moments later Rovers’ keeper, Dan Nolan, was forced to make a great save to deny Shorney a hat trick. Substitute, Dex Neil, came close to grabbing Rovers the points with a fierce drive from the edge of the box with 4 minutes remaining.

In the end Rovers had to settle for a point, which bearing in mind they played almost the whole of the second period with only 10 men against an impressive Portishead team was no mean achievement.

Team: Nolan, Mills, Hailston, Marren, Lidford, Allen, Rideout, Banfield, Lacey, Morgan, Harrington
