Rovers inconsistant form continues with a surprise defeat at Abingdon. Abingdon United recorded their first win against Paulton since being promoted to Division One in 2005 as Rovers’ form once again deserted them. The game started fairly even in bright sunshine.Chris Lane showed some good pace early on, and with Rovers starting to get on top, Robbie Claridge fired just wide and Ricky Hulbert was unlucky not to get a penalty after appearing to be being fouled only to see the referee waive play on. The game developed into something of a midfield stalemate although Abingdon should have scored on 26 minutes when Tom Austin headed the ball just wide of an open goal as the home team started to get the best of the play. Billy Beechers came close to opening the scoring with a free kick after a foul on Michaes Herbert. Just before the break, an error on Rovers’ right gave Beechers an opening as he got beyond the defence and his cross was tapped in by Ancelet Odhiambo who was waiting in the box. The second half started much as the first had ended, with the home side having the initiative, although Rovers seemed to be getting their act together on the 60th minute when Dave Burbrough went clean through, one on one with the keeper but the United shot stopper, Sam Warrell, dived well, and collected the ball from Burborough’s feet. This turned out to be the key moment in the game as a minute later and Rovers fell further behind as Warrell sent the ball straight back into Rovers half. Some sloppy Rovers defending gave Odhiambo another golden opportunity from close range, and he made no mistake to make the game safe for the home team. Steve Perrin made a great save to deny Julian McCalmon as United looked to catch their visitors on the break as they pressed forward looking to get something from the game. Rovers almost pulled one back, with a Ben Cleverley free kick that flashed across the face of the goal missing everybody, and just past the far post. The home side coped well with any threats from Rovers, and finished the game with the upper hand.
