Excellent victory for Rovers

Match report from Dave Neil

Paulton got off to the worst possible start with Winscombe firing in 2 goals within the first 10 minutes, both poor defensive errors, the second after Rovers had a free kick which went horribly wrong.

Rovers had made some changes from the previous game due to injuries.  Keeper Dan Nolan was recalled to the side because of injuries to both Phil Smale and Ross Whittock. James Hailston came in at left back to replace the injured Dex Neil and Sam Farmer started his first game after being out of action for 3 weeks. It was a cahnce for certain players to stake a claim for a starting place more regularly. After the excellent win against Bishop Sutton the decision to bench players was difficult as every player deserved to start.

Immediately Rovers woke up and started to press Winscombe. Eventually the pressure paid off and Rovers were back to 2 each. Both goals came from corners. The firts was headed home by the excellent Rob Banfield to score his 4th goal of the season. A brilliant return for a midfielder. The was scored by central defender Jamie Croydon  and after several attempts the ball bouncing around the box Croydon stabbed the ball home

Paulton were now in control and playing some excellent football led up front by the ever impressive Ben Lacey. The third came after an attacking move saw Rovers get in behind the Winscombe defence and a neat pass played into the feet of Sam Morgan saw the striker get his first of the season and well deserved.

The half time jubilation was marred by an unsavoury incident whereby a Rovers player was sent off. An incident that has not gone down well with Dave Neil. The player involved has apologised to both his team the referee and Paulton Rovers Football Club.

The second half was exceptional with Rovers increasing their lead to 6-2 with further goals from Banfield, Dan Flower(his first of the season) and Ben Lacey who now has 7 goals in 3 games. Winscombe got one back near the end but it was little consolation.  This was a fine performance and demonstrated the resilience and determination of this side. Against this side last season we would of folded. The experience ganed by last years players and the excellent players that have come into the side mean we have a chance of doing much better than last year. A mention to James Hailston who was effectively a makeshift left back and did an excellent job.

Team. Nolan, Mills, Hailston, Lydford, Croydon, Evans, Farmer(Rideout), Banfield, Morgan(Flower), Lacey, Harrington.Capt.

Sub Not used.. Mott

Star Men.. Croydon/Banfield.

Next Wednesday the lads are home again, this time in the BGB Youth League, against Mangotsfield United again with a 7.30 KO.
